The Royal Flying Corps was the aviation arm of the British Army until 1918, when the Royal Air Force was formed.

Norton had started producing motorcycles in 1902 and continued until November 1916, when only permits allowed such vehicles to be produced, as all manufacturing assets were to be diverted to producing crucial munitions and aircraft parts.
