The lightweight Matchelss G3, produced in numbers exceeding 80,000, was highly successful over rugged terrains due to the "Teledraulic" front forks. This made it very popular for those regiments operating in the deserts of North Africa and Palestine.
The Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) was formed specifically to carry out deep penetration, covert reconnaissance patrols and intelligence missions from behind Italian lines, although they sometimes engaged in combat operations, and were often assigned to other units, such as the SAS.
